What is Janmashtami?
Krishna Janmashtami — also written Janmashtami, Janamashtami or Krishna Jayanti — marks the appearance of Lord Sri Krishna in Vrindavan over five thousand years ago, and it is the most auspicious day of the Vaishnava year. Around the world devotees mark it with fasting, kirtan through the evening, the bathing ceremony of the Deities, and a great feast of sanctified vegetarian food.
Our Sydney celebration is a family evening: come for an hour or stay for all of it, bring the children, bring friends who have never set foot in a temple. Entry is completely free — there is no ticket and no charge for the prasadam feast. Nothing is required of you beyond turning up with an open heart.
Programme for the evening
Doors open at 5:00 PM and the celebration runs until 11:00 PM, with these highlights through the night:
- Abhishek of the Lordships — the ceremonial bathing of Sri Sri Radha Krishna.
- Dance drama — the pastimes of Lord Krishna performed on stage.
- Kirtan & bhajans — call-and-response chanting of the maha-mantra; everyone joins in.
- Prasadam — a full vegetarian feast, sanctified and served to all.
